Pt. Rajan & Sajan Mishra

“When we sing, we are one soul singing, even though we are in two bodies” Says Pt. Rajan-Sajan Misra, Born into the family of great maestros of Banaras Gharana with Pt. Ganesh Misra (Great Grand Father). Pt. Sursahai Misra (Grand Father), Gayanacharya Pt. Bade Ram Das Ji Misra, Sarangi wizards Pt. Hanuman Prasad Misra (their Father), Pt. Gopal Misra (their Uncle).

Their Taleem began as if with first breath of life. No wonder, therefore, their music is marked by an unequally reposeful exposition of the raga balanced with aesthetic tension generated through delicate handling of rhythm. The intricate creative process make their rendering both academically rich and melodically abounding. While executing intricate Tanns and Sargams, their wide ranging mellifluous voice, combined with masterly command over the technique, enables them to translate their highest flight of imagination into sublime music.

They are today the foremost exponent of the Banaras Gharana of singing. Saraswati, The Hindu Goddess of music and learning, has amply showered her blessings on the two brothers: Rajan ji is a post graduate in sociology, and Sajan ji a graduate from the Banaras Hindu University.

Music that religiously observes the purity of raga, gifted with rare sensitivity, Pt. Rajan-Sajan Misra’s compositions reflect a high regard of literary content, which brings out their subtlest intended emotions and carry an instant appeal with the audience.

Pt. Rajan-Sajan Misra have delighted audiences all over the world, and their creativity and contribution to the art has won them wide recognition from various quarters, including the much prized honour, the Padma Bhushan Award, Sangeet Natak Academy Award given by the President of India. They have been conferred in the past, Kashi Gaurav Award, Sangeet Bhushan Award and Sanskriti Award given by the Prime Minister of India.

They have extensively toured all over the world to countries sucha as U.S.A. , Europe, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Doha, Qatar, Dubai etc. They have given whole night concert in Royal Albert Hall (London) & Lincoln centre in U.S.A. They have also received most respectful honour as citizenship of Baltimore city of U.S.A.

They have been learning music since their birth with sounds of Tanpura, Sarangi, Tabla and voices of forefathers vibrating in their home and surroundings. Gifted with a very pleasing voice and sensibility for musical notes they toiled through the strenuous music sessions over the years. With focus on performance factor the duo brothers touch the listener’s’ heart with melodious voice and sensuous application of notes. Skilled with rich knowledge of Indian Ragas the duos render Khayal, Tappa, Tarana, Bhajans and other classical forms, casting a spell on the audience.

They have performed at most prestigious concerts all over the world. Their work with famous composer Micheal Nymen has been released as an album (SANGAM) selling worldwide. They have sung 3rd track “Mahadeva” in the album called ‘Rise’, that has been nominated for the prestigious ‘Grammy Awards’. They have given background score to the audio book by Penguine & ANB publisher.

They are ‘A’ grade vocalists of All India Radio and Television. They have been awarded the prestigious ‘Yuva Ratna Award’ for the year 1999. They have also received the prestigious “Bhavishya Jyoti Award” for the year 2007. They have received the prestigious “ Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Award” for the year 2008. They have recently been conferred with “Sangeet Samriddhi Samman”.
